The Salmon Journey

Song
The Salmon song was inspired by a volunteer trip to the Yuba River with kids to learn about the salmon. The story of the salmon deeply touched me and I was inspired to write the song in both English and Spanish simultaneously. As someone born in Colombia, I've been influenced by Latin rhythms, which are an integral part of the song's musical composition. The use of two languages, Spanish and English, allows the song to reach a diverse, intergenerational, and multicultural audience.

The Salmon Journey

I was born in the river
under the surface of the redds
I was first a tiny egg
then became a little fish
And I grew bigger and stronger
To set out on a long journey
Far beyond valleys and mountains
waterfalls and rocky streams

Always following the currents
that will take me to the sea
Always following the currents
that will take me to the sea

You may call me Atlantic
Chinook, Coho or Chum
Sockeye, Pink or King
Wabi or Masu

Once I came into the ocean
swimming up and down the waves
I kept growing big and longer
getting stronger every day
Made new friends and played together
met new challenges as well
Escaping from all of those
that wanted to catch me

And I kept swimming and flowing
looking for a new adventure
And I kept swimming and flowing
looking for a new adventure

You may call me Atlantic
Chinook, Coho or Chum
Sockeye, Pink or King
Wabi or Masu

Now I am coming back home
the same river I was born
Swimming back against the current
swimming back against all odds
To find somewhere I can spawn
so baby salmon will grow
And will start another cycle
getting big and getting strong

And will follow back the currents
swimming far towards the sea
And will follow back the currents
swimming far towards the sea

You may call me Atlantic
Chinook, Coho or Chum
Sockeye, Pink or King
Wabi or Masu

I am the salmon, this is my journey

From the river to the sea, from the sea back to the river
Going up against the current
Swimming forward with conviction
Following my intuition
To the place where I was born

El Viaje Del Salmón

Yo nací en el río
debajo de la grava
Fui primero un huevito
luego fui un pequeño pez
Y crecí más grande y fuerte
empezando un largo viaje
Entre valles y montañas,
mil torrentes y cascadas

Nadando con la corriente
para llegar a la mar
Nadando con la corriente
para llegar a la mar

Me llaman Atlántico
Keta, Rojo o Chum
Rosado o Real
Wabi o Masu

Y cuando llegué a la mar
Bailé al ritmo de las olas
Creciendo más grande y largo
y más fuerte cada vez
Encontré nuevos amigos
también retos encontré
Escapándome de aquellos
que me querían comer

Y así continué viajando
Por más nuevas aventuras
Y así continué viajando
Por más nuevas aventuras

Me llaman Atlántico
Keta, Rojo o Chum
Rosado o Real
Wabi o Masu

Ahora regreso a mi hogar
al río donde nací
Nadando a contracorriente
hasta encontrar un lugar
Dónde pueda desovar
para que nazca un salmón
Y comience un nuevo ciclo
creciendo sano y más fuerte

Para seguir la corriente
que lo lleva hacia la mar
Para seguir la corriente
que lo lleva hacia la mar

Me llaman Atlántico
Keta, Rojo o Chum
Rosado o Real
Wabi o Masu

Soy el salmón, este es mi viaje

Del río a la mar, de la mar al río
A contracorriente voy
Voy siguiendo mi intuición
Sin perder la dirección
Al río donde nací
